Hobokense Polder, Belgium

While enjoying the Hobokense Polder in Belgium, we passed some galloway cows. Can you find the secret code of this Bulls and Cows game? (The answer is provided underneath the puzzle; click on the downward arrow to expand the answer.)

This is how the game works: it is similar to the game MasterMind; you enter a 4-digit code. The computer compares it with the secret code and gives you two clues, the numbers of "bulls" and "cows". A bull means that one of your digits is in the correct position. A cow means one of your digits is in the to-be-guessed-code, but in a different position. For example, if the secret code is 2056 and you ask 9516, the answer will be "one bull and one cow". It doesn't give a hint about which digit is a bull and which digit is a cow. That is for you to find out!

Find the 4-digit number in this Bulls and Cows game

Polystyrene takes up to 500 years or even more to decompose! This is mentioned at 4:23 in the guided tour. So, a take-away box can potentially still be found in the ground!

Plastic bag

Answer:

A plastic bag can take 20 to 500 years to decompose. Problematic though is that it breaks down into microplastics, which stay around in the environment for a very long time as well! This is mentioned at 4:23 in the guided tour. So, a plastic bag can potentially still be found in the ground!

Food waste

Answer:

As food waste is organic material, it doesn't take long to decompose. The leftovers can for example be used as nutrients for plants. So, food waste cannot be found in the ground.

Paper packaging

Answer:

Paper can be decomposed in 2 to 6 weeks, although recycling paper is more environmentally friendly. Whether the dye used for printing pollutes the soil depends on the type of dye. So, paper packaging cannot be found in the ground!

Coffee filter

Answer:

As this coffee filter is made of paper, it is biodegradable. The same applies to the coffee in it; this is even a great fertilizer! So, a paper coffee filter can potentially still be found in the ground!

Paper bag

Answer:

A paper bag also degrades relatively quickly, but as it is in this case wrapped in plastic, it will take a lot longer. So, a paper bag within a plastic bag can potentially still be found in the ground!
